Wow!
What a game!

What a team!

UCF Knights—
the most amazing season.
UCF Knights—
a true hometown team.

Magical.
Memorable.
Incredible.

Wow, what a game!
Whoa, what a season!
Whooo, what a team!

I don’t pay much attention to football and I don’t do news print poems on a regular basis anymore, but this was too much of a big deal to let it go without a shout-out.  Go Knights!

Gridiron Girls

Girls are about frilly pink things?
Girls are all about everything dainty and sweet?

These girls love blood-stained uniforms;
These girls love the punishing pursuit of football—
Tackle football.

The gall  of women
playing tackle football
in an all women’s league.

Why on earth would women want to play tackle football?
Why on earth would men want to play tackle football?
They enjoy it.

They let women get shot at in war;
might as well let them play football too.

Let your little girls play tackle football.
Not all little girls are breakable.

I thought Gridiron Girls (it's a documentary) was a fun topic for a poem.  Play tackle football?  I won’t even watch football.  But to each his own—If the girls want to play, more power to them.

Magic Fans Glum: Dwight Departs

Sadness.
That is all.
Just sadness.
Heartbreaking sadness.

Not anger.
Not blame.
Not even relief.
Not now.

Magic fans,
forced to say goodbye
to Dwight Howard,
the greatest player
in the franchise’s history.

Orlando,
the saddest sports city
in America.
The Lakers got Dwight.

It hurts so bad.

This is from Mike Bianchi’s column.  He made my job easy today with his poetic language.

Dwight was nicknamed “Superman” and was considered to be the greatest basketball player of all time.  And he played for my hometown team, the Orlando Magic, for ten years.

One more thing.  If you stop going to Magic games, take the money you would have spent on tickets to the game, and spend it downtown.  The downtown businesses need your patronage.

It Was Dwight's Night

Cheers rained down on Dwight Howard
from the Amway Center stands Friday.

The book is coming out the end of April with a collection of 101 of the 2012 first quarter poems. I'm taking down the posts, but I'll leave the first stanza of each poem.

Dripping with drama,
Jeremy Lin,
an overnight sensation.

The book is out -- a collection of 101 of the 2012 first quarter poems. I'm taking down the posts, but I'll leave the first stanza of each poem.

The Art Of Rowing

The Orlando Rowing
Club is training
for the upcoming
competition.

It looks easy,
but it is not.
Physically, mentally,
each rower in sync,
doing everything
together.
It’s like a ballet
on water.

Like so many things in life, rowing is about teamwork.  Send your Congress member some oars.

NBA, NASCAR, Traffic

Central Florida—

The center of the sports universe--

the NBA All Star Game in Orlando

and NASCAR’s The Datona 500.

The events are sure

to boost area

businesses,

and snarl traffic

as fans cross paths

On infamous Interstate 4.

Be patient.

It will be fun—

 once you get there.

An exciting weekend for the city,

good for everybody;

great visibility

for this town.

All night parties,

appearances by celebrities,

high-profile festivities.

Taxis, buses

limousines and cars,

bringing people to the arena.

Security checkpoints,

bomb-sniffing dogs,

law-enforcement agencies--

Orlando on the ready.

Will it be perfect?

No—

But—it will go well.

February 26 will be a good day to stay home with a good book.  Perhaps a poetry book? Perhaps my poetry book, “The Poetry Connection”?
