Midlife Malaise

Chimpanzees and orangutans
experience midlife crisis
just as surely as do humans.

Sadness, withdrawal, and frustration
at life’s mid-point,
is perhaps.
driven by biological factors.

The winter of our discontent,
a mid-life trough,
is a universal feature of existence.

Scientists have drawn on
economic, psychological,
sociological explanations,
overlooking the role of biology.

Biology influences mood
at the mid-point of life.

Sadness at mid-life may be pre-programmed, a function of biology, and not due to the circumstances of one’s life.  Scientists have discovered that people in at leat 65 countries, as well as apes, suffer from midlife malaise.
