Thinking About 9/11

Today,
We feel the pain of loss
for loved ones who perished
in the 9-11 tragedies.

Before,

We were a complacent people,
imagining ourselves exempt
from the violence of the world.

In the aftermath,

America bound its wounds,
our nation was bound together
as we embraced one another.

Looking back,

Many of us wonder when and how
America lost that feeling, becoming,

once again, a fragmented nation.

Going forward,

To preserve the dignity of the victims,

and of the heroes, who died that day,
we must recapture that spirit.

There is no more fitting memorial.

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if every morning upon arising each one of us said, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If each of us kept that thought in mind and came together with a sincere desire to find a resolution to our differences, there would be nothing we could not accomplish.
