The "God Particle"

Learn more about the discovery
of Higgs Boson
The Higgs boson
is a sub-atomic particle,
that exists for a fraction of a second.
Long theorized, but never glimpsed.

The so-called “God particle,”
is the key to understanding the existence
of all mass in the universe.
Long theorized, at last glimpsed.

Scientists erupted with joy.
Sir Peter Higgs shed tears.
It is a gigantic triumph for physics.
It is the last piece of the puzzle.

It answers one very basic question:
Why does matter exist?

The Higgs boson is the last missing piece for the Standard Model, the theory that describes the basic building blocks of the universe.  The particle was found amid hundreds of trillions of high speed collisions in the Large Haldron Collider in Geneva which recreated the conditions immediately after the big bang.
